A metal purlin is a horizontal structural member made from cold-formed or hot-rolled steel, used in buildings to support roof or wall sheeting. Positioned between the main structural frames, metal purlins transfer loads from the roof or wall covering to the primary structure. There are two main types:

• C-purlins: Shaped like the letter "C", ideal for simple span applications.

• Z-purlins: Shaped like a "Z", allowing lapping and better load distribution across spans.
